Q: How do I create a 32 beat loop?
A: For a 32 beat loop SHIFT-R (Deck A) and SHIFT-O
(Deck-B) CTRL-SHIFT-R or CTRL-SHIFT-O
If you want to create loops NOT on the
fly, you can create any length you want.
Example for player A:
1. Start the song.
2. Search position in song as a loop
start (or end).
3. Hit pause.
4. Fine adjust position with F3 and
F4
5. Hit cue to set
6. Go to next cue register with 2
7. Search endpoint for loop by repeating
steps 2 to 5
Now, the loop is created with ANY length.
The loop contains ALL beats between your cue-points. To play the loop, switch
player to loop mode by hitting R Start playing loop with F2.
The steps I described work but only
for a length until 32 beats.
Q: What is the checkbox that appears
in the way CFG, call of "Disable read only function on cue 1"?
A: What this does, is it allows you to create a
cue on the first point then you can go back and delete it, with other cues
if you set it to read only you can't accidentally delete them. Basically
you would use that option if you make multiple cues while you are playing.
Q: I am trying to stream without
an external mixer
A: Download and install Netshow tools.
This will solve your problem; it enables
you to stream through Winamp very easily.
Here are the BASICS:
Download and install the plug-ins from
Urban strangers website.
Download and install the Netshow tools
from Shoutcast Website.
Run winamp; in preferences setup your
server details.
Then from Winamp hit CTRL-L and enter
linerec://
This will allow your audio to be mapped
through winamp to the server.
Then simply press the connect button
in the shoutcast server source box.
Q: If you use the SoundBlaster live card do you
get true stereo separation or do you have to use separate cards to achieve
this?
A: with
the SoundBlaster live card, you do indeed get true stereo separation on
outputs 1/2 r/l and 3/4 r/l, however, on the SoundBlaster card, there is
a phasing issue. Meaning....the front channels are pushing the speakers
while the rear channels are pushing the speakers. So if you play the same
track in both player A and Player B at the same time, and fade from r to
l or vice versa, you will hear the music become hollow halfway across the
fader at around 2/4 on either side, because the two audio signals are canceling
each other's productive sound wave output. This is not a problem when playing
two separate tracks, but when the same two are played, you will hear the
phasing, or flanging effect.
SoundBlaster uses this to achieve a
greater spatial imaging effect when the card is used in 4-channel mode with
a single wave output.
If you need a deeper explanation of
SoundBlaster’s phasing issue, Phil of Ashfield Electronics has some more
explanation his website. http://www.ashfield-electronics.com.
I have found also that the relative
output of a SoundBlaster card is a bit lower than that of say an M-Audio,
Turtle Beach, Monster sound, or Yamaha sound card. This is to accomplish
SoundBlaster’s supposedly unparalleled noise floor. I believe they advertise
a negative 110db noise floor reading. There is also a SoundBlaster modification
on Phil’s site for those of you who wish to modify the card to have a higher
output. I did this modification, and found that the card just got a bit louder,
and noisier. The same effect can be achieved by turning your amp up another
couple of notches. As with any amplifier, you cannot increase the volume
of a signal without any negative effects, which we hear as noise. I wouldn't
recommend doing the mod. I had a professional circuit design guy do mine,
and he agreed that the mod was pointless. SoundBlaster simply attenuates
the overall signal giving you a lower noise floor, and subsequently, a lower
overall volume.
The card works like a champ with PCDJ
BLUE, and Jorgen has taken great pains to assure the compatibility of that
product with PCDJ BLUE, so I can tell you with great confidence that the
card is a winner when it comes to using it in your DJ system.
Using two cards will give you a cleaner
more powerful, and frankly hotter output, but when DJing, the volume is
usually such that the lach of audiophile quality is un-noticeable. Especially
because many people DJ in mono to assure that all parties are hearing the
entire song, and not just the L or R channel depending on the speaker they're
standing in front of.
Q: How can I log all of the songs
played on PCDJ?
A: You can log each song you played for more that
20sec. basically keeping a record of the mix your currently doing. Simply
create a group called "Log" without the quotes in the record case.
Q: How do I rip CD's that contain
medleys with numerous tracks, where the music is continuous?
A: you can ripp multiple tracks to one in PCDJ.
Select grab to one mp3/wav in popup menu utilities. It will start on the
cursor-selected track and go from there. Example if you select 2 on a 10
track CD it will ripp 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 to one file.

Q: I want to change/add the genre
information of my tags in a batch process, without changing or deleting
any of the other info in the tags of my MP3’s.
A: Get tag & rename. You can select all of
your MP3's and in one step change the genre or any of the other fields for
that matter.
Q: What is the shortcut for reaching
the "track information" window
A: Control + Home
Q: What are the best settings for
automation?
A: Basic: CFG, Automation fade out/in
Set it to mix at -25, Fade in set to
2 seconds and Fade out to 10 seconds.
Advanced: If you want the ending cut
off for better mixing in auto mode you need to setup cues 17-20. This will
enable you to use the auto mix without and gaps.
In simple terms CUE points 17 to 20
can be set so when you use Auto play mode, those tracks which are set up
correctly can be started, stopped, faded in or out and mixed at precise points
as defined by the CUE settings.
You can also change the BPM at the various
CUE points, so if you wanted to speed a track up to match another, you can
do this with the Auto Mix function.
Cue Point 17 ... Where do I want Track
1 to begin. (This will auto beat match the last track that was playing if
the BPM's of the tracks are close enough to do so)
Cue Point 18 ... Where do I want the
intro of Track 1 to end. (This will begin moving the Pitch back to 0 at
this point).
Cue Point 19 ... Where do I want to
begin mixing Track 2 into Track 1 and begin fading out Track
Cue Point 20 ... Where do I want Track
1 to stop playing. (And no, not necessarily at the end of the song (i.e.
a song has a very long ending and you just want to skip that stuff).
When Track 1 hits Cue Point 20, it will
end playing and load a new track into that deck (auto cueing it in cue position
17) in the 'Auto Play' and 'Auto Shfl' modes.
In the scheme of things, Cue Point 17
should be towards the beginning of the song (there are some tracks that
17 is not at the absolute beginning of the song ... 'No Parking On The Dance
Floor' by Midnight Star is a good example), Cue Point 18 MUST be after 17,
Cue Point 19 MUST be after 18 and Cue Point 20 MUST be after 19.
Q: I recently purchased a rack mount
computer with 2 identical 60 Gig hard drives... one of which is removable.
The idea is to have the removable be 1) a back up of the primary hard drive,
and 2) A shuttling device so that I may work on/edit my record case on my
office computer and later transfer this to my working DJ computer. Would
the drive letter of the working drive need to be identical in both computers
for this to work? I know that the Visiosonic software references the drive
location for the music in the *.ini group files. If this is true, could the
record case be created in one computer, and subsequently used in another
computer? In other words, since my office computer would have the removable
drive configured as drive G, then would the DJ computer need to have the
music and record case groups on Drive G as well? And if so, how would you
create a drive G, when the highest drive letter in the DJ computer only
goes up to E?
A: You do NOT need to do ANYTHING. Build 1044 will
change the drive letter for you... as long as you do NOT change the directory
or file name. Example on one computer
G:\country\shania_twain_-_you're_still_the_one
Could be
D:\country\shania_twain_-_you're_still_the_one
Or
J:\country\shania_twain_-_you're_still_the_one
On another computer, just do NOT change
the name of the directory or the file name.
Q: How can I use my PCI sound card
in a laptop?
A: Check out this site out: http://www.magma.com/pci/pci_2slot.html
Q: What are the DMC1 controller shortcuts?
A: DMC-1 Controller commands...
Match + Shift toggles BPM / % on DMC 1
Waitlist+load that toggles elapsed, remain
time.
shift+bend buttons= bends even more, there
is 3 settings for the levels of bend in the cfg, and shift+bend uses the
second.
shift+match = locks the pitch back to
the slider
shift+load = adds selected track to
the waitlist, if you already in the waitlist, it loads back the track to
the waitlist from player
shift+jogwheel = scrolls faster between
the tracks in the record case when selecting tracks, but this is only if
the player is stopped
shift+cue = when playing it breaks,
if stopped it goes to the beginning of the track
shift+play = when playing and you have
a cue stored it goes back to that cue and repeats for edit, if stopped it
unbreaks.
waitlist+Match= pitch span
when playing, Match+track
rev
= set odd cue
when playing, Match+track
fwd
= set even cue
when not playing, Match+track
rev =
move cue back 1 beat
when not playing, Match+track
fwd
=move cue forward 1 beat
Match+group = load loop normal
Match+preview = load loop rev
while playing, load+pitch
bend button+adjust pitch (small steps)
While playing loop press
Preview for seamless exit
Preview+pitch bend minus=create 4 beat loop
Preview+pitch bend plus=add 4 beats to loop
waitlist+pitch bend=step 0.25 % pitch when playing
preview+bend minus=4 beat loop , autosynced
when playing
preview+bend plus=8 beat loop , autosynced
when playing
step cue back+bend minus
and bend plus =change brake speed
step cue fwd+bend minus and
bend plus =change unbrake speed
Holding down waitlist on both player when not
playing anything will exit the program after a few seconds indicated by the
progress bar on the controller.
***Create a group named
"Log" and all tracks you play more than 40 seconds will be added to that
group.
*** Play a song backwards
for Player A hold Shift and push F3 or Player B hold Shift and push F7.
*** Double click on cue point
erases cue point
***Brake using keyboard:
Shift F1 spin down / Shift F2 spin up
Loops: SET LOOP-POINT SHIFT
-- R
PRESS R TO SYNC.
PRESS CTRL -- R
PRESS F2 (START REVERSE LOOP)
PRESS R TO SYNC.
Q: HOW DO I BROADCAST WITH PCDJ?
A: Firstly, let me say thank you to all those PCDJ
users that are interested in broadcasting their skills to all of us.
There are a few things that are compulsory
to broadcast properly though, if you don’t have them you will need to get
them:
The newest version of Winamp
The Plug ins above (installed on your
system)
An External Mixer
Right, if you have all those then you
are ready to broadcast.
You need to get your hardware set up
first however:
If you have either an SBlive or 2 sound
cards installed there shouldn’t be a problem -
Connect the outputs of your soundcard/s
to the mixer inputs Channel 1 & 2 - as normal. (You can’t use the 1200sl
software mixer really) Most people won’t need to change anything with their
external mixer here.
Now from your external mixer's LINE/REC
OUTPUT run a cable back into the LINE IN of your soundcard - you also need
to keep the cable that runs into your AMP/Speakers as the computer will
not allow you to listen to what you are broadcasting! So you will need to
use two outputs on your mixer (either REC OUT/ LINE OUT/BOOTH OUT/ MONITOR
OUT/ TAPE OUT whatever you have really - one to the PC line in, the other
to your speakers)
That’s it, simple.
In your software mixer (Win 98 on screen
mixer) make sure that the recording device is selected as the LINE IN and
that both of your soundcard/s outputs are not muted or anything silly. (Make
sure you don’t have "What you hear" selected as your record source!) AND
MAKE SURE ALL SOURCES ARE MUTED 'EXCEPT' OUTPUT OF WAV ON YOUR SOUNDCARD/s
(don’t have LINE IN selected so you hear it otherwise you'll get feedback!
just make sure it is selected as the recording device - not playback)
http://www.live365.com/broadcast/
Setup your own account and choose the
option to "Broadcast LIVE" (With 3rd party Tools)
Right now to set up Winamp..........
Get the newest version first and install
it!
Once you have downloaded all the files:
Install the normal *.exe files first
- just run them and do a normal installation etc.
Then do the two Zipped files. Unzip/extract
them both into the C:\program files\winamp\plugins directory.
Then run winamp.........
Configuration: In Winamp, enter the
OPTIONS - PREFERENCES and hit the DSP/General Plug-Ins tree. Select the Shoutcast
Source plug-in, and hit Configure.
Select the LINE IN Recording mode and
Low Pass bit filtering - Click OK
Exit that back to Winamp on its own.
Now click on the small Winamp icon in your system tray (should look like
a cloud) and should open a Shoutcast Source Window with a CONNECT button
on it.
Click the EDIT button at the top and
define the IP address of the Shoutcast server, the port it's running on,
the
Password set up on the server:
If you just want to use mine then the
IP of the server is:
166.90.148.109
Port is: 14360
Password is: 1200
You can also add some information about
you in the bottom fields so we know who’s broadcasting :o)
(Put your own 365.com account details
in here instead if you have set one up)
OK that. Then make sure you have WINAMP
activated and press CTRL - L
Type in exactly:
linerec://
OK that and press PLAY on Winamp!
Notice that it starts to roll the numbers
as if playing something (it is looking for a input signal into the line
in)
Click on the cloud in the system tray
and make sure all the fields under the EDIT bits are OK - then click CONNECT!
When choosing a bit rate amount - 56k
users should go no higher than 2kb, ISDN can get 4-5kb and Cable probably
7kb but it really is trial and error to be honest, ask people if it keeps
breaking up and if so then lower the bit rate!
It should now say SOURCE STREAM CONNECTED
and then start sending some bytes....
(If you are having problems see troubleshooting
below)
Load Digital 1200SL and play some MP3s
and see if your little green screen icons in your system tray light up (this
means that you are sending the streaming audio successfully)
Q: What is ASIO and will it work
with PCDJ?
A: ASIO is Audio System Input Output. It's part
of Steinberg’s Cubase MIDI and 'direct to disk' recording system. This is
NOT compatible with PCDJ at this time
You can find out about it at http://www.steinberg.net
Q: My hard drive crashed, what do
I do!
A: Anyone who has problem with a crashed NTFS,
FAT, FAT32 partition, I successfully recovered 11,100 MP3's on Tuesday. Used
a program by http://www.ontrack.com
called EasyRecovery 5. Very expensive but worked perfectly. Note: The professional
version does NTFS, personal does not.
Q: Why encrypt your mp3's?
A: This is primarily for people or clubs that don't
want others TAKING their MP3's. It will make your
files proprietary to PCDJ only.
Q: What is the importance of keeping
your system properly cooled?
A: Heat is a very important issue with PC's.
Regarding laptops:
Obviously desktops are better because
there is more room and better circulation of air. With laptops, you are
screwed. If you do go with a laptop, I can't stress enough how important
preventing overheating! I have my system sitting on a flat solid metal plate,
and a box fan constantly blowing over the unit. I use a shareware program
to monitor the temp of the CPU and board. Without a fan, it runs at 127+
degrees F!! Sometimes hotter! With the fan, it runs under 99 degrees.
Heat is a common cause of blue screens,
erratic behavior, and hardware failures. Never ever leave a laptop sitting
on carpet or pillow. The rubber feet on the bottom of the laptop serve a
purpose, to raise it up for air to flow, don't defeat that.
More about desktops:
To be safe, on my desktop I added extra
fans. One for the CPU, one in the power supply, one that sits next to the
speaker in the front that blows over the cards, and one that takes up a
slot and extracts the air through the back. I learned this from Compaq file
servers. Our data center runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Very rarely
do we have a hardware failure. Those systems have so many fans, its sick.
When they power up, it sounds like a jet plane taking off. Last year, with
200 servers, each with dual processors and up to six 10,000-rpm drives per
server; I have had one drive fail. ONE!
Bottom line:
If you are lucky enough to get a laptop
working perfectly with PCDJ, take it one step further... invest in desktop
mini fan or box fan from radio shack
Q: All of my ID3 tags are messed
up, I wanted to start over. How do I use a tag stripper?
A: D3V1 editor, and an ID3V2 tag stripper. If I
get MP3 files
From anywhere else, I follow this procedure...
1) Use the tag stripper to remove all
V2 tags.
2) Use the V1 editor to get the V1 tag
correct.
3) Use Red to calculate the BPM and
gain, this creates a V2 tag.
The reason I blow away the V2 tag is
that collectively we have found problems
With V2 tags created by other programs:
The main issue was where you BPM/gain
extract a file; it shows up ok in a player,
But the record case
won't show the BPM, even if you refresh the record case.
Q: How do I converting mp3's from
vbr to cbr (variable bit rate to constant bit rate)
A: Try free software called MP3 workshop from http://www.mp3workshop.net
You can re encode mp3's, normalize,
remove silence and a whole host of other features.
It will re-encode all my mp3's from
vbr to cbr with no noticeable loss of quality.
Q: What is the extra connector on
the DMC1
A: It's for hooking up another DMC. An example
would be for the 4-player version.
Q: How do I Measure the speed of
my sound card?
A: Try a program called Audio WinBench
Audio WinBench 99 will take you deep
into the heart of your PC's sound system, with objective and subjective
tests to measure CPU usage, hardware voices, 3D positioning, and more. Audio
WinBench 99runs on Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows NT, Windows
2000, and Windows Me.
Audio WinBench 99 measures the performance
of a PC's audio subsystem, which includes the sound card and its driver,
the processor, the DirectSound and DirectSound 3D software, and the speakers.
If you'd like a copy of Audio WinBench 99 on CD-ROM (that same CD also includes
WinBench 99 and 3D WinBench 2000), use this on-line request page.
You'll need DirectX version 6 or later
(which includes DirectSound and DirectSound3D) to run all the Audio WinBench
99 tests. DirectX is available as a free download from the Microsoft Web
site.
Q: My Pitch slider moves on it's
own?
A: While using the mouse to change pitch, small
step buttons over and under the pitch reset can be set to lock and that
way slowly changing the speed, this is by design.
Works like this:
1.right click and hold down the mouse
button on pitch step up or down
2. While holding down the right mouse
button move away from the button
3. Release button.
Q: Where are some MP3 tag editor programs?
A: Some of the utilities available are:
1. Dr. Tag at http://www.asterius.org/en/index.htm
2. MP3 Tag Studio at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio/tagm.htm
3. For explorer shell see http://www.mutschler.de/mp3ext.
Download the program MP3ext. Install
the program.
In the Windows Explorer click with the
right button of the mouse on the sound file MP3.
Select Properties and MP3-Info.
You will directly be able to alter the
information of the file.
ONE PROBLEM WITH THIS PROGRAM: It does
not keep the BPM count. It allows you to edit the tag by simply right clicking
on it, but if the tag had a BPM counted by PCDJ, it returns it to zero.
4. There is a program called "Helium"
Q: When bpm counting I notice some
tracks show up as: *000.00 (star) or +000.00 (plus) or +136.93 (this is
a normal track) Can you explain what the difference is between "+" and "*"
and why are some tracks 000.00 still even after the count is done?
A: when you start scanning/extracting bpm &
gain, it will look like this:
000.00
Then first gain gets added for each
file, it becomes:
+000.00
Then PCDJ extracts bpm, it looks like
this:
*137.89
This is just during the scanning/extraction
procedure. When loading new songs into waitlist, all should look like normal:
000.00 or
137.89
Some files won't BPM, it has something
to do with the sound of the track and the way PCDJ creates an envelope so
it can extract the bpm.
I have a few tracks which do have a recognizable
beat, but it is not very obvious and sometime for a short period of time,
as they have a lot of phasing and harmonious routines, I think this is why
the BPM scan can not pick up a steady and definite beat count.
For those few tracks, which this occurs
on, you would be best using the info mode and pinging the beat, at least
you will get it within a reasonable margin of being correct.
Q: How do I set all of all of my
MP3’so they are not "read only"
A: start- find - files and folders-
Type in the search
*.mp3
Wait a sec.
Then ctrl+a to select all mp3's
And right click and unattrib the read-only
bit!
Works every time!
Q: I have thousands of mp3s that
have "track 1" or "track 2" in their ID3 comment tag (EAC added this automatically)
and I want to automatically remove this from all of my mp3.
A: check out Tag & Rename or other tag edit
software.
You can batch process things like copying
file names (artist - song) into the ID3v1 or ID3v2 (used by PCDJ), or delete
all v1 or v2 tags, or copy the v1 into the v2 tag and so on...
Q: Can some explain the differences
between: ASIO, WDM Driver, and DirectSound (direct x?)
A: it is different ways of communicating with the
soundcard
Asio is NOT developed by Microsoft and
has been used for years by studio software. The approach they use is a little
different than direct sound, if its better or worse compared to Direct sound
depends on what you want to-do.
Direct sound is part of DirectX, DirectX
was first developed for games to be able to fast hardware access since windows
by design is not meant for time critical/real-time applications, so its
a Microsoft compromise. Now and especially with DX8 it is very good for
studio and producer software, and you will see alot of studio applications
that will use the new dx8 added functionality.
WDM is stands for "Windows Driver Model"
and is not a new direct x or Asio, its a new low level driver model that
newer direct sound drivers uses. This model opens up new and better functionality
in direct sound, for example multi-channel streams, and is a better approach
all together. If you can find WDM driver for you soundcard, then that is
the better choice.
Q: If I wanted to mix with my laptop,
but setup the Gain, BPM, and Cues on my (faster) home PC; how would I do
it? Assuming I recreate the exact same directory structure, would I only
need to move the *.ini files, or do the "edited" MP3s also need to overwrite
the older versions?
A: Because that info is stored in the Tag and in
the MP3 file, you need to overwrite your old mp3's with the new one...
You only need to copy your ini files
if you want to have your groups the same as on your pc.
Q: Anyone know any good program find
and delete duplicate mp3 files?
A: mp3 space maker (free download) at
http://www.215software.com/index.asp?dpage=stayinformed.asp
Your multiple mp3 files must have the
same name.
Here are 2 utilities I have written
using Winbatch that may help you manage your MP3.
Those are not refined but were very
useful in my case. I'll be happy if they help you too.
They are: http://infobeat.tripod.ca/listfiles.exe
This utility will create a file containing
path and filename (.M3U by default but you can change it) using a keyword
that you will be asked to specify. This is useful for me since I have a
structure like this:
c:\mp3\mp3 on cd 1\dance\...
c:\mp3\mp3 on CD 2\dance\...
And so on.
So I specify the keyword "\dance\" and
I get a playlist containing all my dance songs on all my 14 CDs.
http://infobeat.tripod.ca/findtwins.exe
I use space maker to clean up mp3 files
that are the same. In some case, the file is the same but not with the same
name:
Ex: like a virgin - madonna vs madonna
- like a virgin
This utility will list you and ask you
to delete files that have the same size.
Q: Is there any way to keep windows
from launching its CD player application automatically upon disc insertion??
A: open the windows CD player click on help once
opened then click on the disable autoplay instructions and it will tell
you the steps you need to do to accomplish the small feat.
Q: How do I properly configure a
Darla 20 or Darla 24 card to work with PCDJ?
A: Full details are available at: http://www.disc-jockeys.net/darla.html
The following information is for users
of the Darla 20 and Darla 24 sound card. While these setting also apply
to the Gina sound card, some of the diagrams will not appear the same in
the Gina setup.
After installing the Darla card the
first thing that you need to do is to disable ALL system sounds. Most system
sounds tend to be at 11 kHz or 22 kHz.
So imagine that you're recording the
best mix of your life and someone clicks on something on the screen. The
22 kHz system sound will play out of an unused output and drop the sample
rate of the whole system to 22, ruining your mix.
To disable your system sounds, click
Start, Settings and then Control Panel. Once the Control Panel opens, click
on the Sounds Icon and the Sounds Properties box, shown on the left, will
open. Simply select the No Sounds scheme and click OK.
(If you really want system sounds, keep
your cheapo sound card installed and play them through that. Set the preferred
device in the Multimedia control panel to the cheapo sound card and check
"Use preferred devices only." - See below for details)
If you really want systems sounds, you
can play them through your old cheapo sound card. To ensure that the system
sounds do net get played through your Darla card follow these simple steps.
Click Start, Settings and then Control
Panel. Once the Control Panel opens, click on the Multimedia Icon and the
Multimedia Properties box, shown to the right, will open.
Under the Preferred device for Audio
Playback select your old sound card. You will also need to place a Check
in the box labeled "Use only preferred devices."
Once you have done that you may close
the Multimedia Properties box by clicking OK.
Now you need to tell the driver to keep
the card locked at a particular sample rate, no matter what. While the sample
rate is locked, all sample rate change requests from applications will be
ignored and the card will remain at that sample rate no matter what.
To lock the sample rate open the Darla
Mixer, shown to the left, click Edit and then click Sample Rate Lock. This
will then open the Sample Rate Lock box, shown below.
For the purpose of using PCDJ you will
need to set the locked at rate to 44100 as shown to the right.
You are almost done, however to ensure
the sample rate is locked for both Players in the PCDJ software, you must
complete the next step listed below.
To complete the Sample Rate Lock click
Start, Settings and then Control Panel. Once the Control Panel opens, click
on the System Icon and the System Properties box, shown on the left, will
open.
Now click the Device Manager tab and
click on the + sign next to Sound, video and game controllers. This will
expand the devices and allow access to the Darla sound card.
Echo device as shown to the left and
click the Properties button. This will then open the Darla by Echo Properties
box, shown below.
It appears that DirectX 6.1, 7 and 8.x
get confused when they see multiple DirectSound outputs. The first output
pair gets set up correctly, but the rest of them don't.
To work around this problem, once the
Darla by Echo Properties box opens click on the DirectSound tab, just enable
the DirectSound format lock and select the 44100 Hz sample rate. You will
want to leave the format set to 16 bit and stereo.
I am told that future versions of DirectX
will resolve this problem, but for now just lock the format.
Note that this is not the same as the
sample rate lock, which was documented above.
Now you will need to setup the PCDJ
software for the Darla sound card. In this step it is IMPORTANT to select
the correct direct sound driver for each of the Players.
In the CFG mode, click on the Soundcard
1 tab. Now select one of the following; Darla Out 1/2, Darla Out 3/4, Darla
Out 5/6 or Darla Out 7/8. Do not select any of the Analog Playback options,
as they do not support DirectX.
You will also need to select the appropriate
Volume control to match the select Darla Out setting.
Once you have setup Soundcard 1 you
must then do they same for Soundcard 2.
Q: When scanning a CD in PCDJ, I
get "Rip Error: Illegal CD Unit Number"
A: Try this... download ASPIINST.EXE from
Adaptec to upgrade your ASPI files to
ASPI (Advanced SCSI Programmer's Interface)
is a software layer defined and maintained by Adaptec. Although originally
designed for SCSI devices, it now supports both SCSI and IDE devices. That
is why Win95 and Win98 include it as part of its system components. This
API is composed of three files: WINASPI.DLL, WNASPI32.DLL, and APIX.VXD.
ASPI layer is the only path that PowerDVD uses to communicate to IDE/SCSI
DVD-ROM drives for performing mutual authentication with region-protected
DVD titles for proper key decryption and data descrambling. But ASPI layer
may sometimes be overwritten or corrupted by the installation of other software
or various IDE/SCSI device drivers. When the original ASPI layer is overwritten
by an incompatible one, the path to IDE/SCSI DVD-ROM will no longer exist
and thus the authentication process with region-protected DVD titles will
fail. PowerDVD might report various error messages in this situation, depending
on the nature of the incompatible driver. However, all error codes have a
common prefix "8090xxxx" or "80axxxxx". This is not a problem with PowerDVD
itself. Should you encounter this kind of incompatibility:
The latest version. However, that upgrade
requires either an Adaptec host adapter or an Adaptec version of the ASPI
layer, which may have been installed by an application or a SCSI device driver,
which is currently in your system. Or you can check if there is an ASPI
layer upgrade from your SCSI host adapter or device vendor.
Q: I'm still using the DMC PCDJ version
that came in the box with the DMC1 controller. Is there an update available
and how much does it cost?
A: Currently, if you purchased a DMC1, you *ARE*
entitled to the 1044 version of BLUE FREE, download it from http://www.pcdj.com and it will install
overtop of the existing version. Make sure your DMC is connected and powered
up when installing the update. Also note that there was a bug with the old
blue cue points that don't work on RED or the 1044 blue so you will have
to redo them! The best thing is call Visiosonic and upgrade to RED, which
has more features like...
Configurable turntable brake
More cue points
Track volume normalize
Track bpm counter
Loops
Ability to run PCDJ as the shell
Q: What does the slider with the
green dot next to the pitch glide do?
A: The green dot shows the location of the DMC's
actual slider position. When the slider moves up, so does the green dot.
Q: I have one soundcard in my computer...
I want to have the possibilities of hearing a song in my headphones...Without
coming out the same speakers as the main sound. I'm not going to buy an external
mixer YET, so I want to use Work mode 2 then (internal mixer, Player A and
B stereo Soundcard 1, Monitor = Soundcard 2). My idea is to buy a less expensive
card and to plug my headphones in the line out of that second card. Can I
use the monitor function then with this second card??
A: Yes you can with work mode "2": A and B on sound
card one works just fine so try getting another sound card
A: It may be worth you while obtaining a SoundBlaster
Live! This acts as TWO soundcards, and has an extremely low noise floor,
although this is achieved at the expense of a lower output level in general.
There is an issue with phasing on the SB Live! but this could be overcome
by reversing the connections to one of the outputs. At least with this card
you can use any of the Work modes almost. And it has the benefit of the environmental
effects should you wish to edit your files and add effects whilst recording
them.
Q: I'm having trouble when I save
files. It seems to take forever to save songs after editing. I know it saves
the whole record case, but man, I need to schedule an appointment to get
new files in. The computer is a celeron 550 Meg w/ 192 ram. Things were a
little slow as I put more files in, but now it's getting stupid. Is there
a way to quicken this up a little? Could it be the 8000 songs that I put
in?
A: You may have too many tracks in a particular
group. Try breaking down your Major groups as much as possible, you will
be able to work with you groups much quicker this way. Each group is an independent
Ini file, the more data in one file the longer it takes to save all your
info. I suggest about 1000 tracks per group and my refresh and save group
time is very fast. I wouldn't go over 1000 a group.
Q: I'd like to know how to get out
of edit mode so I don't keep screwing up my Cues using the keyboard.
A: Make your cues read only. When the song is in
a player...
Press INFO
Press CUES
Look for the CUE to protect.
Press CMDS, check read only box.
Now this CUE is being locked and cannot
changed before the lock has been taken away
Q: How can I export my PCDJ record
case to Excel For easy printout?
A: In the current version there is not a button
that will allow you to print this list. But there is a way to do this using
Excel. This is not a very easy process for the novice Computer user so some
playing around may be needed. If you are familiar with Spreadsheets this
will be simple.
Start Excel
Choose Get External data from the Data
menu item.
Select Import Text File.
Make the "Files Of Type" "all Files"
From the open screen go to the "c:\program
files\d1200sl\group" folder and select the File while matches the group
you would like to print. (Note: if you would like to print the whole list
then select the first one and then or Default.ini and repeat these steps
until all files are imported)
Click the Import Button.
Choose Next
In the Delimiters section check mark
Semicolon & UN check Tab.
Click ok and you will have this in excel
to manipulate and Print Choose
Next.
Choose Next Again and then finish.
You should now see all of you information
in the spreadsheet and can manipulate this any way you would like!
Q: I have a laptop and I launched
PCDJ today and the audio was choppy, it would pause for brief milliseconds
during playback on both decks, no matter what song I loaded it sounded almost
like master tempo was implemented. I was ready to reload from a ghost image
when I remembered I had left "IT" in. The bright orange pocket sized device.
"Xircom RealPort CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 card" I removed the card
and the audio played normal. What is going on?
A: If there is network card in the slot but not
connected the card keeps trying to find the network and while it does it
will cause your music to hiccup. Same thing happen to me at a gig, when I
mistakenly left my card in the slot. When I booted into PCDJ and it started
playing a song it keep skipping until I found the card in the slot and removed
it. I was going nuts till then. When the card is in the slot it must be connected
to the network.
Q: I sometimes get a "Insert media
message" when I have tracks in the record case that is on a network drive
A: If you have tracks in the record case that is
on a network drive you can sometimes get an "Insert media message". This
is due to windows not having reconnected the drive after reboot, this reconnect
is done automatically when you browse to it with the explorer, which explains
the sometimes factor. If you were to try this in winamp, it would exhibit
the same problem (nothing gets loaded, until you browse to the dir). To
fix it, map a network drive in the explorer and select "reconnect at logon"
and all your record case that links to that drive will work (without you
having to browse to it with the explorer).
A: Sometimes depending on the version of Windows
your using, one machine will be assigned as the master browser for a network.
If the machine you are using PCDJ on is the master browser then rebooting
can sometimes knock out the network for a short while (sometimes up to 10
minutes). If the network is always running, then the way round this is to
configure an always-on machine to be the master browser. Also, if your network
does not use a master browser and you are running Windows 98, rebooting
sometimes disables network communication through explorer for a while too.
Using Find/search for computer/, finds the network drive straight away,
although explorer may sometimes never find it.
Q: I have been cleaning up file names
and re-tagging songs using an external tag editor program. It all works
perfect until you try to play some of the songs. I have noticed that the
songs that are screwed up are ones that I ripped on either version 3.9 or
one of the betas that followed. (All of the song played fine before I worked
on the tags) The songs come out sounding like garbled chipmunks on acid.
I have tried to strip the tags and retag but I still get the same problem
I then have certain songs that will only play on PCDJ and all other programs
they come out garbled. This has something to do with the Re-tagging but I
have no idea. Has anyone else had any experiences like I am having and is
there any fix other than re-loading?
A: Sounds like encrypted MP3's... and when you
deleted the tag you deleted part of the encryption.
Q: I get the message "Could not detect
hardware acceleration support for the soundcard, edit cues with sound will
be disabled" whenever the program starts. Songs then play fine, but if I
try to set a cue, it locks up. I close the software and when I return, my
group is gone.
A: If you get the warning "Could not detect hardware
acceleration support for the soundcard, edit cues with sound will be disabled"
it is because you are not using DirectX or your sound card does not support
Direct X. If you are sure that your sound card supports Direct X (or Direct
Sound), go to Microsoft's site and get the latest version of Direct X.
Q: All of my MP3's are in separate
directories. How can I import them into the record case all at once without
having to do each folder one by one?
A: As of this time, PCDJ cannot import folders
as subgroups. However there is a program I wrote called PCDJGroups. Download
it here... http://www.online4u.be/pcdj.htm
Q: I am not happy with the sound blaster live sound quality. What else
is out there that supports 4 channels?
A: The Darla 20 or 24. I could not detect an audible
diff between the two using PCDJ software however, the connection point of
the outputs are different, Darla 20 has a 2input/2output RCA block that
connects directly in the back of the soundcard behind the computer. The
24 has the same input/output number of channels, but it is connected to
a break out box that has a 3-4 ft. cable that plugs into the soundcard in
the rear, pending on your setup preference and requirements, you should
choose accordingly. Finally WIN2000 will not work with the Darla/PCDJ combo
because of lack of Direct Sound drivers. Win 98SE works flawlessly for me.
The Maya 44 from www.audiotrak.net works very well in
any OS for PCDJ.
Turtle Beach Montego II's are a solid
solution. Make sure you get the Montego's with the newest chipset and the
18bitDAC's they can be ordered off of Voyeur’s homepage for around 40 USD
each. They sound MUCH better than SBL, I just don't prefer the 1/8 connections.
They install very easily in WIN2000 however, I found it a little difficult
installing them in WIN98. They are the 2nd most economical route.
The Delta 44 from www.m-audio.com is a preferred card for
many PCDJ users.
Q: How do I set Cue points? The manual
tells how to adjust one, delete it and what the colors are but I can't find
where to just set one.
A: Hit the Play/pause button. Reverse the track
a little (seek in reverse or forward and you should hear it stutter). Click
the cue button. That simple! If you still have problem after that, make
sure your tracks are not "read only" in windows explorer. Also make sure
the track information is not marked lock. You can also just push play then
ctrl f2 then cue.
Q: What is Pitch?
A: Using the pitch function you can alter the playing speed of
a song.
Q: What is Pitch Bend?
A: The pitch bend function causes a brief alteration in the playing
speed of a song, similar to speeding up or slowing down a record.
Q: When I run the automatic BPM extractor
how do I make it automatically update my track information?
A: It won't automatically update. Here's what I do. After it gets
the BPM, go out of the waitlist and into your normal list. Right click and
select "refresh".
Q: How do you set the DMC1 to display
the BPM instead of the pitch?
A: hold down MATCH and then press SHIFT
Q: For the last 2 months I haven't
been able to get my record cases to save. I have to re-do them every time
I enter config mode, or close PCDJ
A: I run PCDJ on Windows ME, and the problem that
encountered to me was that some files with the character ";" (semicolon)
in any field of the id3v2 tag wouldn't load.... When I removed it everything
went fine. Also check where your PCDJ data is held (from CFG), and that
the *ini files in there are not some kind system protected by Win2k, or
that they are not Read only
Q: How can I optimize my system so
that it will run on a system that does NOT meet the minimal hardware
requirements?
A: Although this is not recommended, I have PCDJ
Red running (and mixing) successfully on a
Sony Viao super-slim Pentium 266MHz
with 64MB of RAM; and the OS is Windows 2000!
What's cool is the laptop's size: everything
is external on this thing so it sits about 1/2" high and
Has a 10" active matrix screen. Here's what I did to make it work:
-Clean, default install of the OS (1
partition, NTFS)
-Applied Service Pack 2
-Installed latest DirectX version
-Installed PCDJ
-Installed WinAmp (hey, until this app
is rock-solid...)
-Transferred MP3 files from desktop
using crossover cable between network cards (ask me
If you want instructions for doing this;
I moved about 3 gigs in 15 minutes)
Before running PCDJ, I stopped the following
services to free up resources:
-Computer Browser
-DHCP Client
-Distributed Link Tracking Client
-DNS Client
-IPSEC Policy Agent
-Network Connections
- DO NOT STOP THE Print Spooler or
PCDJ will cease to function!
-Protected Storage
-Remote Access Connection Manager
-Remote Registry Service (disable for
security reasons)
-Routing and Remote Access (disable
for security reasons)
-RunAs Service
-Server
-Task Scheduler
-TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service
-Telephony
-Workstation
I may have missed a few since I set
some to "Manual" instead of "Automatic," but you can
Experiment. NOTE: You can stop these
services to free up resources on any computer, but my
Configuration assumes the laptop functions
ONLY as a DJ machine. This means it does not
Connect to the Internet or a network
(especially a domain). Also, the services you stop will
Restart upon reboot so you'll have to
stop them all again. You could make a batch file to do this
Using "net stop 'service name'" commands. At this point, with no applications running, the OS is
Using about 38MB of memory. I've seen
PCDJ use about 25MB of memory or more, but
Sometimes less, so the laptop is barely
using its swap disk. As for the CPU utilization, once
I
Start PCDJ, I go into the "Processes"
of Windows Task Manager and change "pcdjred.exe" to
Priority "High" (right-click, Set Priority).
PCDJ uses almost 100% CPU during some short, intense
Moments, like the first few seconds
of mixing a second song, but bounces around 30-60% with 2
Songs playing. The screen refreshes
are a bit on the slow side but the songs still drop on my cues
And the audio isn't affected. IMPORTANT: Use the Fraunhoffer MP3 decoder (option in
the CFG
menu of PCDJ); it uses MUCH less CPU
processing. Hope this info helps y'all squeeze some
More juice out of your PCs!
Q: How can I optimize my Windows
2000 disk performance?
A: Here is something you
can do to optimize your Win2K settings (this setting is valid for systems
with at least 128MB Physical RAM. Use at your own risk!!
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEMS\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\SESSIONMANAGER\MEMORY
MANAGEMENT\
DisablePagingExecutive=1
IOPageLockLimit= 1028 (default is 0=512kb for Win2K Pro & 0=1028 for
Win2K Server)
LargeSystemCache=1
You should notice a BIG difference in Disk Performance when you set the
IOPageLockLimit from the default value of 0 which equals 512kb to between
1024 ~ 2048 etc. I would recommend setting it to 2048 if you have 128MB, if
less, leave it 0. If you have over 128MB RAM, you can play around with it
to get it to it's optimal performance. I have mine set to 2048.
If you would like to see the difference in disk performance, try copying
a large file, say about 300MB to another disk or folder with the default
settings and try doing the same thing after you change the setting from 0
to 1024. You will notice that the meter that shows how much of the file has
been copied will disappear a lot quicker! The disk will be spinning, but
the task will be finished in the GUI. You will especially notice a BIG difference
on programs such as Photoshop and other programs that require heavy disk
access.
Q: I get static from Deck B when
I move the slider, but it sounds fine once I stop. I've tried moving slow/fast,
but it doesn't seem to matter.
A: To reduce (virtually eliminate) static reduce
sampling rate conversion in windows sound configuration to GOOD and not
BEST and put acceleration to STANDARD (direct sound only) and not maximum
acceleration. This will reduce CPU load and static sounds when pitch change
and also during the turntable brake feature...
Q: I have encoded somewhere just
over 8000 tracks from my mobile library. Each track has been names as follows
artist - song title (artist space hyphen space song title) I was very particular
about this from the very beginning to avoid duplication. So why when I look
at the PCDJ list do some for them come up under artist, with no track name
at all, and some come up with the exact same artist and track name, and
some of them come up under only track name? Some have comments, and versions...
I want to look at my record case in alphabetical order, but there is no
chance of me getting the case to display completely in order because it
isn't seeing the way I have named the tracks.
A: The reason it is doing that is because PCDJ
works off of ID3V2 tagging. No matter what you put in as file name if there
was already a tag made then that’s the info you will see (especially downloaded
files). Like Shark said you need to get a program like Tag and Rename or
DR. Tag. Both can strip old tags and make new ones from the file name the
way you want. Be very careful to make sure none of your files are encrypted
because if they are and you strip and re-tag the songs WILL NOT PLAY
Q: Why use a DMC controller?
A: It all depends on your style of mixing, if
you like to get really creative and slam loops in and out and use breaking
and pitch bending in real time, then the DMC-1 gives you more control over
all of this, it's so much easier to work a Jog Wheel and a Real Slider than
to press little square buttons.
#3 keyboard alone - cheapest solution,
meant for hobby or home use where beat matching is not an issue
#2 hot keys controller - a step up,
much better than a keyboard, for light beat matching and mixing
#1 Numark DMC1 - full blown out professional
use, best choice for club, studio, mobile, and scratch mixing
Q: Does anybody have any problem
with tag information being altered after editing an MP3 using the Goldwave
MP3 editor? Every time I use it, the tag becomes unrecognizable by PCDJ,
although the tag is still OK in "Tag & Rename". Does anybody have this
problem?
A: Goldwave does alter the ID3 tag and become
unrecognizable by PCDJ. The developer has already been informed of this.
Q: Is there a way to change the Pitch
range without having to stop the show and go into CONFIG? Most of the show,
I have it set to +/-8%, but occasionally I would like to do a speedup to
50% for certain songs (Macarena, Hava Nagilah, Chicken dance, etc...)
A: Yes, you can do it by pressing ctrl +5 or ctrl
+0 at the keyboard..... and waitlist + mach button at DMC1 controller. This
works already at PCDJ. Try it!
Q: When encoding, what is the difference
between Stereo and Joint Stereo?
A: A common question is what the different stereo
modes are used for in MP3 files.
Joint Stereo: Joint Stereo shares certain
bits between high frequency left and right channels. This improves compression
efficiency at a slight loss of stereo separation. Lower frequencies are treated
as normal stereo. Use Joint Stereo to obtain the best overall quality at
mid-to-lower bit rates. < 224 Kbit.
Stereo: Stereo includes two independent
channels. The total bit rate remains constant, but the split between the
channels can vary. The Encoder uses this flexibility to improve quality by
allocating more bits to the channel with the more dynamic signal. Use the
Stereo setting for best quality stereo audio at higher bit rates.
Dual Stereo: Dual Stereo includes two
completely independent channels (left/right), each with half the total bit
rate. In effect, it is two mono files packed into a single file. Dual is
generally used for multi-lingual audio programs.
The higher bit rate the larger file
and better sound quality. 128 Kbit is MP3 standard and 64 Kbit is WMA standard.
128 Kbit is the same as 16000 bytes (128000 / 8). That is 16 Kbytes per
second or just a little bit less than one MB per minute of music. That is
equal to a compression ratio of 1:11.025. 128 Kbit is usually referred to
as CD quality. That might be true for most songs but some songs needs higher
bit rates to sound perfect. Use headphones to listen for artifacts in the
MP3 or WMA files.
Q: What is indexing?
A: When loading an mp3, the sound engine looks
for an mp3 frame containing a silent frame containing the addresses to all
frames in the mp3. If the file doesn't have one it
scans the mp3 and generates the frame in memory. That frame then gets saved
into the mp3, if the mp3 is marked read only or is on a read only drive the
frame gets stored in the shortcut file in the DATA directory. The next time
you load that file you will not see any indexing since it’s loaded directly
from the file or shortcut file. Why do it this way? Its
very important to positioning correctly when working with mp3 and a bad
mp3 file with bad or incorrect frames can make very nasty digital noise,
and also totally mess up the exact cueing so it doesn't work at all (and
looping will also be messed up). So again, use decent encoder software and
no freeware crap. Version 5.1 encoder and ripp functions are rewritten
and work a lot faster than 5.0 (5.0 did however produce 100% correct mp3
files).
Q: I am looking to move my PCDJ install
on to a newer faster machine and wondering how do I backup all my record
case, list, bpm's, cues etc so I don't lose them.
A: You should have a CD with serial # to re install
the program Install this on the new machine first. The record case is stored
in My Documents, after installing PCDJ on the new machine, copy the PCDJ
Record case folder over to the new machine. Also make sure that all your
mp3s are in the exact same spot. Example: C:/mp3s/blahblah/fdslk/adad/something.mp3
if that’s on your current computer then that’s what should be on your new
computer other wise your record case can’t find them. You can also Use PCDJGroups
at http://www.online4u.be/pcdj.htm then; you can move your MP3's anywhere
you want.
Q: I still have PCDJ Digital 1200sl
3.9 and I don't know how to update. Is it the update PCDJ Red the same as
1200sl?
A: The PCDJ BLUE is the equivalent to the 1200sl.it
is the free update. Call Visiosonic to obtain the update.
Q: How can I have PCDJ name the files
so it names the files Artist - Track.mp3?
A: For my archives I use the MINUS symbol "-"
but with a space at each side, this also makes it easy to read in Windows
Explorer. Example: Modern Talkin - Brother Luie (laptop mix).mp3 The separation
code in PCDJ for this is " - ".
Q: How do I determine which version
of DirectX I am running?
A: run dxdiag from the start run menu and the first
screen at the bottom will have the build version 8.0 ( 4.08.4000) etc..
Go to this site for more information... http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q157/7/30.ASP
Q: Why does the main volume control
turn the opposite way to the mouse pointer?
A: move up and down. Think of it as the volume
going up and the volume going down as you move the curser. Picture it as
a slide controller.
Q: When I try to access some subgroups
songs on PCDJ red I get the message that flashes real quick "insert media
file 1C481A08" and on 3 other subgroup song files I get other numbers of
media files. Why is this happening? How do I fix it?
A: If you rename or delete or move your mp3s then
this happens. It means the filename changed, moved or is no longer available.
Q: when I start PCDJ red software
my mouse stops working?
A: If you using a serial mouse, or a PS2 mouse
this could be the cause. I had the exact same problem when I first installed
PCDJ on an old PC I had that did not have a PS2 port. When PCDJ starts,
it takes over the serial port unless you disable that mode. You need to
go into the CFG screen and change the controller mode from external controller
to keyboard only I believe... try all of the different modes.
Q: I just purchased a new system
a 1U case that would fit into my SKB case with a NEW AMD Duron processor.
The sound was fine. Then 1st gig with it, it played fine for an hour and
then stop playing a song for no reason. I could even start the song over
again and it would play through. Small time later it happened again. Playing
a portion of the song and stopping. What is happening?
A: We have seen crashes when using unclean power
(spikes)
A: The problem is the power supply....
A: Anything less than a 300w with AMD Athalon or
Duron and your going to run into issues (crashing, intermittent shutdowns,
non power on's...) they are hungry little chips
Q: Has anyone had any trouble with
PCDJ and ABIT Motherboards?
A: Some motherboards like ABIT use the VIA chipset
that handle IRQ routing and the PCI bus in a way that does not work well
with bus master cards and work POORLY with PCDJ. This is also why you may
have trouble with certain sound cards as well. There is a patch that may
help, called the "4 in 1 driver" and it can be downloaded here... http://www.viatech.com/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp
Make sure you do in fact have a VIA chipset before installing this patch
and if you have a choice stay away from these types of boards altogether.
Q: My Emagic EMI 2|6 card does not
always work when I power up my system; what should I do?
A: This is fixed in the Emagic driver 1.3 or greater.
Q: I am using the 1044 red
build. I re-did my DJ system and put windows 2000 on it. After all was done
the DMC would lock up (sometimes at the init stage and if it passed that
stage it would only last about 30 seconds after that).
A: Try turning off the FIFO in the serial port
settings
Q: How do I get tracks
into the different groups I have listed under the record cases? For example,
I need to put lots of tracks into trance, dance, etc.... How do I do this?
Also, will the track stay in my master list as well, or will it remove it?
A: Highlight the Group you wish to add your tracks
into...now hit the edit record case button. This will pop up a window. Search
for the songs you wish to add in the bottom left area (basically windows
explorer). When you open the folder containing the MP3's they will pop up
in the middle area. Highlight the tracks you wish to add. Select the proper
subgroup you wish them added in the top right area.... now hit the Add selected
tracks to subgroup button at the bottom of the middle window. Now all the
highlighted tracks will show up on the bottom right. And just hit OK. This
will not remove the tracks from your master group.
Q: I get an Error in MMSYSTEM004:
The specified device is already in use
A: To resolve this error, first open Control Panel
and double click on Multimedia. On the audio tab, set the Preferred Playback
and Recording source to your sound card. Press apply and OK. If the Multimedia
Section is grayed> out, then do the following: Click Start, Select Run.
Type "SYSEDIT" and press OK. Several small windows will appear in one large
window. Click SYSTEM.INI window to bring it to the front of all the other
windows. The section should be the first section and should have the following
lines without additions: sound.drv=mmsound.drv
Drivers=mmsystem.dll
If these lines are missing,
you will need to type them in at the end of the section. If similar lines
are there, but do not say the correct thing such as a line that says "drivers=power.drv"
you will need to comment that line out by placing a semicolon (;) at the
beginning of the line and then recreate it the way it should be. Scroll
down to the section. Look for lines that begin with device and end with
.386 (example: device=bsbpd.386). Comment out any such line by placing a
semi-colon in front of it (example: ;device=vsbpd.386). Scroll down to the
section. This section should contain the following two lines:
Wave=mmsystem.dll
Midi=mmsystem.dll
If wave or midi refer to other
.dll files, place a ";" at the beginning of those lines and recreate them
as they should be. If either of these lines is missing, add it. If there
are any lines referring to "wave1=…" or "Midi1=…" comment them out by placing
the semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line.
Next scroll to the section
and look for the following:
waveaudio=mciwave.drv
sequencer=mciseq.drv
cdaudio=mcicda.drv
If any of the above lines has
any extra characters such as a number, delete that character. Place a semi-colon
before any reference to mcixing, mcimix*.
Click File on the top menu
bar. Click save.
Click File again. Click on
exit.
Restart the system.
Q: I am looking at using
a laptop with 2 Roland UA2 USB soundcards and external mixer with DMC-01
controller... just wondering if anyone out there has tried this and what
success they have had?
A: This will NOT work. Windows
will only recognize one USB soundcard! You cannot use both at the same time
regardless of who makes it.
